Samsung Galaxy SIII announced - 4.8-inch HD display, TouchWiz Nature UX and 8-megapixel camera
04 May 2012 – After months of anxious waits, Samsung has officially unveiled its Galaxy SIII Android flagship at the Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2012 in London.
On the exterior, the Galaxy SIII looks similarly to the Galaxy Nexus and carries a dimension of 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm and a weight of 133g. It is a tad thicker and heavier than its predecessor, the Galaxy SII. It will be available in two colours at launch, Pebble Blue and Marble White.
Dominating the phone’s surface is the 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display that supports 1280 x 720 resolution pixels. Samsung cleverly avoided mentioning the processor of the device, but various report pointed that it is powered by the latest 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad processor together with 1GB of RAM.
It runs on the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with TouchWiz Nature UX, which the company touted to give you the “natural interaction” with the phone. For example, “Smart Stay” uses the front facing camera to monitor your eye to keep the display bright, while the S Voice, the customised voice control allows you to shout “snooze” to put your alarm off. Samsung has also enhanced the original Android Beam in its S Beam, allowing you to transfer 1GB of data within 3 minutes.
Camera-wise, it has an 8-megapixel zero shutter lag camera with a LED flash. The camera starts up in 990ms and takes continuous shots at 3.3 shots per second. Samsung also included a feature that is smart enough to take eight continuous shots at one go and chooses the best one. There is a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera.
The Galaxy SIII is a quad-band device and supports LTE in selected markets. Other obligatory connectivity options include WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS/GLONASS and NFC. The device has a 16/32/64GB of internal storage and accepts microSD card up to 64GB. It is equipped with a huge 2,100 mAh battery.
No official pricing has been announced, but the Galaxy S III will be launching in Europe on May 29, follow on with a global launch. The 4G variant of the phone will be coming to the US and Japan this summer.
