Comparison - Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Sony Xperia S
08 May 2012 – The Samsung Galaxy S3 or Samsung Galaxy SIII was announced last week. The Sony Xperia S was announced during CES 2012 in January. The S is the successor to the Arc S, itself an upgrade to the original Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is obviously the successor to the highly successful Galaxy S2, and all indications are that Samsung has made another super phone for the Android OS.
Both devices have 32 GB storage, although the S3 comes in a 16 GB version. They are both Android OS devices, but the Samsung comes to market with the latest Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) while the Sony is subject to an upgrade to its box version of Android 2.3.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a giant 4.8-inch screen, but the same number of pixels (720 x 1280) as the Xperia S and thus has lower resolution. It weighs a little less (133 vs 144g) and has a massive 1.4 GHz quad-core processor inside.
It is also one of the first phones to start accepting 64GB microSD cards, so there is a lot of storage inside this device. There is also plenty more battery (2100 vs 1750 mAh) to drive the quad-core and the larger screen.
The Sony Xperia S has better resolution with the same 720 x 1280 pixels on a smaller 4.3-inch screen. The Galaxy S3 has larger 4.8-inch screen.
It also has a higher rated camera (12 vs 8-megapixels).
The Galaxy S2 made Samsung the top handphone manufacturer in the world. There is every indication that the Galaxy S3 will continue that legacy. What is needed now is to see if the battery can manage the demand of that huge screen and multi-core processor.
The Samsung Galaxy S III is likely to cost a lot more than the Sony Xperia S. I would say 20% more is a reasonable figure, but any more than that and the Xperia S would probably be the better buy with the higher-rated camera. Besides, the larger screen and size of the Galaxy S3 may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

The Samsung Galaxy S III is the successor of the Galaxy S II that runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with Samsung nature-inspired TouchWiz UI. It has a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display with 720 x 1280 resolution pixels, 1.4GHz Exynos quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM.
There is an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash that is capable of recording 1080p full HD video at 30fps and take photos simultaneously. It is also a quad-band device and supports HSPA+ (21Mbps), WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, energy efficient Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, GPS and GLONASS.

Sony Xperia S (RM 1795-1979)

Sony Xperia S was announced at CES 2012 with a 4.3-inch 720p display and some pretty impressive specs - a gap-free laminated Reality Display. The Xperia S features a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 12-megapixel Exmor R camera R camera sensor, NFC support, and PlayStation certification.
According to Sony, it’ll come with Android 2.3 and not Ice Cream Sandwich, at least not until second quarter of the year. And the Xperia S comes in black and white – for now.
