Samsung overtakes Nokia and Apple

30 April 2012 – Samsung overturned Nokia's 14 year hold as the world's largest maker of mobile phones, in terms of shipments, according to Strategy Analytics. In the first quarter of 2012, Samsung shipped 93 million phones compared to 83 million by Nokia.

Espoo fell from 30.4 percent to 22.5 percent of global market share, while Samsung now has 25.4 percent.

Nokia displaced Motorola as the world’s largest phone maker back in 1998.

The South Korean firm dominated on the smartphone front too, jumping from 12.2 percent to 30.6 percent market share. Apple is still nipping Samsung’s heels, with, growing from 18.1 percent to 24.1 percent. And if those figures are correct, the two companies shipped more half of the world’s smartphones, which grew to 145 million.
